Apartment/Refurbishment

About

Overview

Refurbishment of apartment at Elisenbergveien 30, Oslo.

The apartment is a former attic space in a ne o-classical building from 1892, located on a quiet and idyllic street in the Frogner area of Oslo. The apartment was completed in 2001 and has undergone several refurbishments since then. Our assignment was to plan a small remodel of the apartment, which our client had just pur chased. The scope of work included integrating a new bedroom, renovating a broken staircase, and laying a new floor.

Before the conversion, the material and color pa lette was simple and bore the stamp of the 90s, with stainless steel, glass, and white-painted plastered walls often dominating. We aimed to introduce a warmer base tone for the apartment, with more natural materials such as wood and textiles. Solid oak was chosen for all the floors, and new furnishings and stairs leading to the existing roof terrace were replaced and built in oak. The walls in the kitchen and hallway on the west side of the apartment were covered with maple plywood, while the other walls and ceiling were painted in light color tints, helping to crea te a greater sense of depth in the room.

We designed a new kitchen interior with an integrated dining area and a seven-meter hybrid piece of furniture with shelves, seating, and a workspace along the high brick wall to the south. Similarly, we created a new ”wardrobe island” by the entrance, also with an integrated seating area. Norwegian oak was used in all the custom furniture and in the kitchen, which gave the apartment a timeless atmosphere that harmoni zed well with both new and old furniture, as well as family antiques.

To counter potential drafts of cool air in the win ter, we proposed enclosing the living area with transparent woolen curtains. The result was a more sheltered space that could be altered according to needs. The curtain runs along the edge of the sunken ceiling and can also serve as a space divider when different activities are taking place in the apartment simultaneously. The outcome also significantly improved the acoustics in the apartment. The wool fabric was custom-dyed and woven by Sjølingstad Uldvarefabrik. The curtains, along with the pure wool used for both the curtains and new seat cushions, added extra warmth and materiality to the large loft apartment, which was exactly the effect we were aiming for.
